TERMINOLOGY — canonical slugs (Henry Ford)

Canonical slug table for this KB. Concept notes in concepts/ are named by these
slugs (English, hyphenated), following the My Life and Work vocabulary. The «do
not flatten to» column guards against collapsing Ford's terms into the modern
business-school or motivational-poster descendants that his book helped spawn.

Notes on flattening

  • service-before-profit is not a marketing slogan. For Ford it is a claim
about causation: «profit … cannot be the basis — it must be the result of
service». Reverse the order and, in Ford's view, the business dies.
  • machinery-as-liberator is not techno-utopia. Ford's claim is narrow and
material: power and the machine set men «free to live» by lifting drudgery
(«What a waste it is for a human being to spend hours … behind a slowly moving
team of horses»), not that machines are good in themselves.
  • money-making-not-business cuts against the reading of Ford as a
money-worshipper: «Money chasing is not business»; «the end of money is not
ease but the opportunity to perform more service».
  • prices-down-volume-up is a policy, not a discount tactic: cut price
because of manufacturing economies, transfer them to the customer at once,
and let volume carry the aggregate profit.
  • assembly-line / standardization-method are means to the service end,
not ends: standardization «may seem bad business unless it carries with it the
plan of constantly reducing the price».
